Salmeterol is a long standing beta adrenergic bronchodilator, which works by opening up the airway and improving the ability to breathe. The other active component is Fluticasone, which is a corticosteroid that acts by reducing the irritation and swelling of the airway.
This medication is indicated in the treatment and control of symptoms like wheezing or shortness of breath due to recurrent episodes of asthma or continuing lung disease like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, bronchitis, etc.
Fluticasone is a corticosteroid which reduces the mediators of inflammation like cytokines, histamine, etc., and thereby helps control the constriction of the air passage. Salmeterol is known to stimulate the intracellular adenyl cyclase which catalyses the conversion of adenosine tri phosphate to adenosine mono phosphate. Adenosine mono phosphate helps widen the airway and thereby improves breathing.
