Terazosin is a drug, which relaxes veins and arteries so that blood can flow through it easily. It belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. This drug is mostly given to individuals suffering from hypertension and prostate enlargement. It is an alpha-1 antagonist and is marketed under the name Hytrin and Zayasel.


Terazosin is prescribed to help relax veins and arteries for blood to flow through them easily. It is used to treat high blood pressure. It can help to lower blood pressure in people suffering from hypertension. It is also given to men who have enlarged prostrate so as to improve urination. This medication helps in relaxing the muscles around the prostrate thereby helping such men to urinate easily.

Dosage and administration

Usually, physicians advise patients to take the 1 mg tablet, once a day before going to bed if the patient is in the initial stage of hypertension or prostatic hyperplasia. This medication can be taken on an empty stomach or after a meal. The maintenance dose may be increased to 2 mg or 5 mg once a day, as prescribed by the physician. Swallow the tablet as a whole and do not chew or break it. Take this medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor. In case you miss a dose, do not take 2 doses at one time. Just skip the missed dose, take the next scheduled dose, and resume as usual. Your physician would advise you on the proper use of this medicine.


  • This medication causes severe dizziness thus do not perform any activities that require you to remain alert after taking this medication. It is often advised to take this medicine before bedtime.
  • Consult with your doctor regularly to check your blood pressure while on this medication as it lowers blood pressure.
  • Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.
  • Inform the doctor if have any existing or past allergies to any substances as the medication may have such substances in its composition. In case you experience any allergies or discomfort while using this medication, stop using this medication and consult the doctor immediately.
  • Do not consume alcohol or tobacco while on this medication.
