Ethionamide tablets belong to a class of drugs called antibiotics. It is primarily indicated in the treatment of active tuberculosis infections. It works by stopping the growth of the bacterial cells, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Ethionamide is used with other medication to treat active tuberculosis in patients who are resistant to the first line drugs, like isoniazid or rifampin. It is used in combination with other drugs, since the use of this drug alone leads to the development of drug resistance.
The drug is available as tablets of 250 mg concentration. The usual daily dose depends on the patient's body weight, age, medical history, and the body's response to the drug. The drug can be taken with or without food. The usual daily dose for an adult is 15 to 20 mg/kg/day, to be taken orally either once a day or in divided doses. The drug is initiated at a dose of 250 mg, and the maximum daily dose should be 1 gram that is to be given in divided doses. Antibiotics produce best results when they are taken at evenly spaced intervals.

Before being prescribed this medication, inform the doctor of your complete medical history, whether you suffer or have suffered from any liver ailments, kidney disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc. The doctor would then determine if this medication is right for you.
Patients are advised not to consume alcohol during the course of this drug therapy.
Your doctor may prescribe you Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) along with the drug. It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully.
It is essential that patients adhere to the drug regimen for the complete duration, otherwise, it may lead to the development of drug resistant tuberculosis, which is a life-threatening condition to deal with.
Do not take two doses at the same time if you miss to take a normal dose of the drug. Just continue with the usual drug regimen on your next dose.
Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers are to use this medication only if it has been prescribed by the doctor.
Safety of this medicine has not been established in children under 12 years of age.
In case of any severe allergic reactions like rashes, hives, swelling of the lips, mouth, eyes, etc., tachycardia, excessive sweating, nervousness, tremors, change in vision, or any other reactions, discontinue the use of the drug and consult your doctor immediately.
